Before move-in day and before your classes begin, there are three major boxes to check off before you start college: orientation, housing and financial aid. The steps below will help you feel more prepared and confident!

Step 1: Register for Orientation

Why it matters: Orientation helps you get familiar with your college, meet other students, register for classes and understand campus life.

What to know:

  • Orientation is often required, so don’t skip it
  • Some schools offer in-person, virtual or hybrid options
  • Dates fill up quickly, so the earlier you register, the more choices you’ll have

What you’ll typically need to register:

  • Your student ID or portal login
  • Your intended major or program
  • A parent/guest registration (if they’re attending too)

📌 Check your college email or student portal for your school’s orientation link and deadlines.

Step 2: Secure Your Housing

Why it matters: Where you live affects your day-to-day life, commute and comfort. Whether you’re living on campus, off campus or at home, planning is key!

If you’re living ON campus:

  • Complete your housing application ASAP
  • Pay the deposit (if required)
  • Choose a meal plan
  • Look out for roommate selection or matching forms
  • Read move-in day instructions

If you’re living OFF campus:

  • Start looking early for available rentals near campus
  • Ask your college if they have off-campus housing listings
  • Budget for rent, utilities, groceries and transportation
  • Review your lease carefully before signing

If you’re staying at home:

  • Create a college success plan: transportation, study space, quiet hours, etc.

Step 3: Don’t Forget Financial Aid

Why it matters: Financial aid can help cover your tuition, housing, books and other college costs, but only if you’ve completed all the steps!

What to do now:

  • Double check that your FAFSA/WASFA is submitted
  • Review and accept your financial aid offer in your student portal
  • Check your email and portal regularly for missing documents or updates
  • Ask your financial aid office if you’re eligible for work-study or emergency grants

📌 The earlier you finalize your financial aid, the better your chances of securing your full award on time.

Deadlines Sneak Up! Don’t Miss Out!

Make sure to:

  • Log into your college portal regularly
  • Check your email for housing/orientation updates

Getting your orientation, housing and financial aid squared away early sets you up for a smoother start to college life. Take time to plan!
