Julie-Anne Pearson currently serves as a College Success Coach at Eastern Washington University — her alma mater — where she supports students with dedication and heart. A proud CSF Alumna and Gates Scholar, Julie-Anne has been deeply connected to the College Success Foundation since graduating high school. Over the years, she has served in a variety of impactful roles, including nearly seven years as a School-Based Advisor at the high school level. For the past three years, she has continued her commitment to student success at EWU, where her passion for empowering and guiding students shines through in all she does. Julie-Anne truly loves her work and brings that energy to every student interaction.

What university did you attend?

I attended Eastern Washington University, then University of Washington–Tacoma, then came back to Eastern Washington University — I graduated from EWU. Go Eags!

What advice would you give to students who are navigating the challenges of college life and preparing for their future careers?

Don’t give up. Ask questions, and remember, “communication is very key.” If you want help or don’t understand something, reach out to your resources so you can get the assistance you need. You don’t know what you don’t know, so go out there and network. Starting conversations can build bridges and create strong relationships that influence your future careers and success. It’s not just about what you know, but who you know.

What initially drew you to the field of education and student support, and how has your journey evolved since then?

I was a Gates/CSF Achievers Scholar when I was in high school. I saw the work my College Prep Advisor Rob Jones did, and I was inspired. I loved the interactions he had with students and the positive impact he had on so many people. I wanted to do the same in my future career. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been told I’m a big “people person,” and this is very much true. I deeply care for the well-being of my students, and I love to build relationships, witness growth and positively impact people whenever and wherever possible. I love my job. I love who I work for and who I work with.

What’s your go-to comfort food or favorite meal, and why do you love it?

Lisssten. I love me some chicken, sweet potatoes and some vegetables! I also enjoy pasta. Ooh! And blackened salmon … and cajun shrimp, too. Essentially, I love almost all foods, but chicken and potatoes are probably top of top for me. If you’re talking about dessert, I like ice cream, specifically chocolate, chocolate and peanut butter, or rocky road. Food is a love language for me. Feed me, and my mood can change. SN: I also love sugar-free white chocolate, sugar-free caramel Americanos with a little bit of oat milk. (I know that’s not food, but it’s still important!)

What’s your favorite way to unwind after a long day, and do you have any go-to hobbies or activities?

After a long day, I don’t know if I can say I really unwind. Once I get home, it’s time to cook dinner and do household tasks. I suppose when I get a chance, I scroll on TikTok to learn new things and/or watch a show or movie on a streaming platform. One of my favorite things to do is talk to my teen son whenever that can happen, since he’s very busy with high school, college and sports. As far as go-to activities are concerned, I enjoy going for walks or rollerblading, I like doing TikToks/dances and talking on the phone with family and friends. I really love learning and experiencing new things. I jumped out of a plane once, and I’d do it again. I’m very spontaneous, and there aren’t many things I wouldn’t try for the first time.
